I started my homelab in 2007 with a $25 ancient computer I bought at GoodWill and converted to a firewall. Eventually I added a couple of wireless cards for a DIY access point. Eventually I upgraded to an old Dell PowerEdge R230 server running pfSense. My setup is much more robust now, though looking at my rack you may not know it!
